If you are pregnant, or think that you might be, you should definitely talk with Drs. Choi & Choi. There are several reasons for this. If you are planning to get pregnant, or if you have just become pregnant, you should have the dentist give you a cleaning and an exam. That way, you will have your cleaning done, and any potential problems fixed before the baby arrives. Also, there may be some procedures that we may want to delay until after the baby comes. If x-rays are required for your procedure, we can give you an lead-lined apron to wear, and a lead-lined collar to protect your thyroid. The best time to schedule a non-emergency appointment is during your second trimester. That is when treatment will be most comfortable for you and safest for your baby

A part of pregnancy is morning sickness. That can result in acid from your stomach in your mouth When that happens, rinse your mouth, and brush your teeth 30 minutes later to make sure that the acids are not able to erode your tooth enamel. You will undergo hormonal changes during pregnancy which can result in an increased risk of gum disease. You may also experience “pregnancy tumors”, which are overgrowths of your gums. These growths are benign, but your dentist can remove them if they are causing you problems.

Of course, the best thing you can do to keep a healthy mouth is to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss at least once a day. As soon as you know you are pregnant, or think that you could be, you should let your dentist know. If you develop a dental emergency, call the dentist right away.
